Getting my Japanese Passport in my mid-twenties

I know this has been talked about on a few different threads but I have a pretty unique scenario, so just looking for some advice as I navigate this.
I’m in my mid-twenties and am ethnically half-Japanese, but was not born in Japan and have never lived there. My mother is ethnically fully Japanese and has both US and Japanese passports. From what I understand, I was not registered with any Japanese family registry when I was born, but my Japanese grandparents are still alive and reside in Japan. I speak very basic Japanese but have a good understanding of the culture (I majored in East Asian Studies in college).
I now work for the US branch of a Japanese company and have a desire to move to Japan in the future, perhaps to work for this company (or perhaps not) – but either way having a Japanese passport would make that choice a lot easier. I feel like my case is strong but ultimately from reading have come to understand that my not being registered at birth is a huge roadblock. Is there still a pathway to me obtaining citizenship?
