I’ve been living in Japan now for several years but originally come from a western country. I’ve recently got into photography, and want to understand a bit more about the street photography etiquette that is expected in this country, particularly in Kyoto where I am based.
I would never go up close to someone and stick a camera in front of their face unexpectedly, but I have found myself zooming down streets to catch people riding their bikes, or people walking down paths or crossing streets etc.
Sometimes the emphasis is on the surrounding environment and architecture and the people are secondary, but sometimes they become the focus of the shot, and often they are facing the camera and become reasonably identifiable.
First and foremost I don’t want to be making anyone uncomfortable if they see me taking photos that may include them in the shot.
Here are some of the images I’ve taken so far. I’ve blurred all identifiable faces for the meantime as a precaution. Some of the people are far away. Some are not. I’ve also included some that don’t actually show their faces directly.
