My friend is applying for PR soon and asked me to be his guarantor. I looked up what documents are needed and I found some conflicting information.
Some posts and websites state that I need tax certificates going back 1-3 years. Some say I need to give my juminhyo. Others say I just need to supply a letter of guarantee. Does anyone who did it recently know the correct answer?

Doesn’t look like you need to provide tax information anymore.
The tax document requirement was eliminated. Now it is just the designated stamped form and a residence certificate.
There are a few rules that I have learned in my 23+ years of living in Japan (Tokyo, Kansai) and that is never become a guarantor to anybody for anything. This is just good business.
If you do it and things go south, it will put you at risk for your PR or visa as you are “guaranteeing” this so called friend is on the up and up but life happens. Best not to do it.
