Can Japanese citizens register a legal alias? Can parents register a legal alias for their children? My kid has a few middle names and Japanese institutions just can’t bring themselves to wrap their heads around the concept, so I’d like to consider registering just the given name as an alias if it will make life easier.

How did you get their middle names on the koseki? To the best of my knowledge the only way is to make one really long given name which – why would you do that to a child in Japan given Japan’s naming convention?
I’d suggest going to family court and getting their given name changed legally to something they like.
