What is the origin of the kanji often used for schools?

So I’ve been noticing for ages that there’s a certain symbol often associated with schools. I don’t mean 文, btw. To provide visual context, click [here](https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:School_badges_of_Japan) for a wikipedia entry that shows a bunch of Japanese school badges. Many of them sport a certain kanji (?) that I cannot find in my dictionary.

This isn’t an important question by any means, I am just curious. Where did it come from and what does it mean?

Edit: thank you guys. Someone posted it in the reply, so for better context, I meant this: 髙
