Acquiring proper accent through singing J-pop – good or bad idea?

Hi everyone!

I am a beginner Japanese learner and currently at ~N4 level. I am very enthusiatic on singing and J-pop and it is probably 50% reason why I want to learn Japanese (to understand J-pop and the lyrics!).

Recently I have been attempting to record myself singing Japanese songs, and I got immediately disgusted by the bad pronunciation I have. I am trying to fix it seriously by shadowing the pronunciation of the singer (by serious I mean recording myself singing the sentences one-by-one and compare them with the singer’s pronunciation until it sounds “right”).

So my question is – is there any thing that I need to be aware of – eg. accent of the singer itself. I am not sure if the singers are pronuncing words as they would in daily speech. I am a big fan of Fujii Kaze and the last song I am trying to follow is æ—…è·¯ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRZWD4Hv-6s). I have no idea whether he has special pronunciations in singing that I should not learn for the purpose of daily speech (but I assume no).

Also, any good song / singer recommendation for such exercises? Thank you 🙂
