Question about getting a Japanese bank account as student and receiving money from overseas.

Hi, I’ll be moving to Tokyo in March to study for two years. I read that in order to rent an apartment I’ll need a japanese bank account. I’ve read that Japan Post lets you open a bank account before you’ve lived in japan for 6months. I’ve also heard that Japan Post can be a bit slow in actually giving you your account details. (Sometimes taking more than a month to receive after opening your bank account?)

I’d like to find an apartment within the first month of being in Tokyo though. If it takes a while to receive my account details will I be able to sign an apartment lease?

Another question I have is regarding receiving money from overseas. My family will be assisting me monetarily from overseas and I was wondering what the best way to transfer money to a Japan Post bank account would be. Just direct transfer via bank? I’ve heard of people using wise. Is there any benefit to this as opposed to a bank transfer? They will be sending money in EUR if that makes a difference.
