Just had the police visit for a noise complaint

Hi guys, hoping you can help and share some insight, information, advice or your own experiences.

We’ve got a really grumpy downstairs neighbor that likes to complain about our “noise”. We moved into our apartment in August, and as of tonight have now received 4 noise complaints. 3 through building management and one through police. The first of which was within one week of moving in.

We are not noisy, never had complaints in previous apartments with thinner walls, etc. We are careful.

After the second complaint, we offered a bottle of sake (had to leave at the below neighbor’s door as he wasn’t home) and tonight after the police left, I went downstairs to apologize (complaint was at 8:30, and police arrived roughly 10 minutes after I turned some music on while I cleaned).

When I knocked on the door, before I could even say a thing, he started yelling at me, “urusai yo” “I’ll call the police again” etc. I just apologized a few times and walked off as there was clearly no placating him.

These complaints are causing my partner to stress about any sound, and during a period when work is already busy enough.

Right now I’m open to any suggestions on how to handle this, from the petty, to the most mature, as I’d like this resolved ASAP for my partner’s mental health.

What are consequences of repeated noise complaints?

Can we be evicted?

How should we be handling is, short of becoming mice in our own home?

Do you have any similar experiences?
