Digital reading is preferable since you can instantly look up words with the browser pop up dictionaries like yomichan or with kindle. With physical reading I usually use Shirabe Jisho on my iPhone as a dictionary, and I review and add the words to anki later.
You just stumbled upon the 多読-精読 dilemma. It’s your decision imo
Personally I prefer physical. Annotations are good if you like me and bad with names.
I’m also voting for digital reading + yomichan. If physical books are preferred, I recommend the “Japanese” app, its a free and very simple dictionary with a straightforward word list feature. Each list can be easily exported and then integrated to Anki for SRS (although the app offers its own SRS study feature as well).
