I am currently working in marketing with a Humanities/International Services visa.
My company told me I have permission to do freelance work as well, but I’m getting mixed answers on what’s allowed and what is not.
From my research, I understand that for work in Japan, I’m allowed to do other work as long as it falls under my visa category, and for extra work aside from what is covered with my visa, I’ll need to get permission from immigration, which will then allow me to do 28 hours of that kind of work. Though I’ve also heard from some people that for any work outside of my full-time job, I need permission from immigration regardless if it’s already similar work. I wanted to see if anyone could shine some light on this from experience and such.
Additionally, I have some opportunities to do freelance work for a company back in The United States. I understand that as a U.S. citizen who has lived in Japan for 5+ years, I am obligated to report any foreign income made to the Japanese government, but is there a restriction on doing work for overseas entities that just go into a foreign account regardless, or does Japan and my visa have no say in that matter, aside from needing to know the income is being made for tax purposes?
Not sure if this is asking a lot from this subreddit, but if anyone has any insight for me to start with, that would be great. Otherwise, I’ll likely consult with an immigration lawyer if things aren’t super laid out and clear.
Thanks in advance!
