  1. Japan taking notes from the CCP playbook. How is this any different from the National Security Law?

So to clarify my point, from the article:

“The degree to which an insult will be considered punishable under the legislation remains unclear.”

And therein lies the problem. I agree online bullying and people using the mantle of anonymity to be absolute dicks is a problem, but making “insults” illegal without specifying what constitutes an insult is a massive legal slippery slope.

  2. Seems like a big deal. But with how passive aggressive and nuanced the language can be, shouldn’t be hard for people to still vent online without it qualifying as an “insult”.

Probably just weed out the unimaginative trolls who directly tell people to go kill themselves and the sort.

  3. LISTEN UP CHUMPS. NO MORE ROASTING INDIVIDUALS ONLINE UNLESS YOU WANT A CHOPSTICK SHOVED UP YOUR BUTT IN JAIL

  4. “Online insults” seems almost like an *intentionally* over-broad translation, as though the authors of the article (or the translator) were counting on a specific reaction from the “free-speech-as-in-free-of-consequences” crowd. This bill is specifically intended to curb campaigns of *targeted harassment* (in Japanese: 誹謗中傷), which is a very real problem on social media.

  5. This is some weak shit. I hope it is a misleading headline and is an anti harassment or anti sralking5bill instead.

  6. Go to NHKs website, and read the article in Japanese, it makes much more sense.

  7. They did that to protect themselves from people insulting institutions, government officials, politicians and political parties.
They never really cared about people but they are super sensitive about criticism.

  8. They use isolated tragedies to further their agenda. Pretty soon lèse-majesté will be the order of the day, arresting anyone who criticises the Emperor or Prime Minister.

  9. Wow so pretty much everyone on Japanese Twitter will be sent to jail within a week after this bill passes

  10. 記事の翻訳がクソ!こんなに下手だとびっくりするわ

    そりゃ日本語盲目しかいないこのsubじゃみんな勘違いするわな

Insult online in this article is about cyber bullying, not about insulting someone online guys, damn people, how pessimistic do you have to be to exist on this sub?!

  11. All the other problems surrounding suicide here and this was the solution they came up with… Politicians are the worst!
