I’ll be moving to Japan in march to study for two years. I’ve read that a lot of banks have limitations on opening a bank account if you’ve lived in Japan for less than 6 months. Is this rule of 6 months current residence or if you’ve previously lived in Japan for over 6 months a couple years ago would that count as 6 months of residence? Sorry if this question has been asked before I was trying to find an answer and couldn’t really find it.

I opened my bank account immediately after moving here. So did all of my coworkers. Only way to receive salary.
you can open an account in Japan Post Bank as a student afaik
edit: not much you can do tbh if this is the only bank available as soon as you arrive. jp government scholars also receive their stipend thru japan post bank so plenty of students have accounts there
