Studying Japanese in Japan at 18

So I’m Planning a trip to japan for 2-5 weeks next year (ill be turning 18) somewhere in-between April and November I’m just now starting to try and learn Japanese by myself so I would be prepared ahead of time but I have heard its pretty difficult to self teach Japanese. So I was wondering should I pay for a class for learning Japanese while I’m there or I’m fine studying on my own. How long should I study Japanese for my whole time there, 2 weeks, idk that why I’m asking whoever answer’s this

I’m 17 as of now and will be turning 18 before I go, I didn’t know if I was eligible to be able to get into a Japanese language school(didn’t know if there where any restrictions since I know the legal age in japan is 20 and you cant really do anything if your a minor)

and yes I do plan on going again if I can hopefully so its not just like a one a done type thing I will put a use to all this/that knowledge I can.

  2. You can absolutely self study Japanese effectively. as for how much you should study before coming, to be honest, you really don’t need any Japanese to simply visit, but studying a few popular Japanese textbooks could be helpful

  3. 18 doesn’t really count as a minor anymore, you probably won’t be able to drink though. You can go to language school as long as you have the funds and a high school diploma. Taking a few classes won’t get you anywhere and will waste the short time you’ll spend in Japan though. In other words, do at least 3 months or just study on your own.

But tbh for short visits… some basic phrases should be enough. Tokyo (and most of Japan’s cities) are very foreigner friendly these days, there’s a lot of English around, you just gotta keep your head about you and figure out how to get around using the resources you have.

  4. If you’re really keen on learning Japanese while being here, my former language school [has a short course](http://eastwest.ac.jp/matriculation.html) (4 weeks is the shortest period) you can enroll in. It’s definitely gonna be a mon-fri thing though so you pretty much can’t go staying in other prefectures while you’re enrolled.
