I’m not sure of this is the correct sub for this question, apologies in advance if it isn’t.
I was wondering if Japan used typewriters in the first half of the 20th century. I tried some Googling but I couldn’t find anything to confirm or deny it.
I know that nowadays keyboards imput latin alphabet letters that the software then recognizes and changes into Kanji – more or less. But that would not work for a typewriter, I suppose. Nor could they implement thousands of keys for each individual kanji. So I’m curious if anyone knows if – and how – typewriters were used back then, as well as any other kind of “analog” technology similar to those.
