Japan move for Late Bloomers?

Looking to hear from people who’ve made the move to Japan later than the norm. I’m back in school after working in a field I didn’t like for a decade, I’ll graduate with my Bachelor’s at 36 this spring. I’m coming from the US.

For now, I’d like to find some seasonal work in my field (land conservation), and then use my savings in the offseason to go to language school in Japan (have maybe n4 level right now) and start to make connections and find cities I like for an eventual move. I’d like to work in the ecotourism industry there, in my previous travels I’ve really enjoyed sleepier prefectures like Miyazaki and Wakayama, places with natural beauty but low population. I don’t think you can become a park ranger without Japanese citizenship, but that’s my dream job here in the US.

Has anyone else moved to Japan in their 40s and above? How did you manage? Is tourism a good industry for someone older than your typical entry-level worker?
