How are references submitted?

Hi all,

I’m aspiring to apply for JET next year when applications open.

I’ve been researching the application process and I understand that I will be required to submit 2 references with 1 of which ideally being an academic reference.

I’m gonna be graduating university in the summer, so by the time I apply I’ll already be a graduate.

I was wondering how the references are submitted? Does the referencer have to submit it themselves somewhere or can they just send me their letter and I submit it?

I ask as I’m probably going to email some of my lecturers soon as I want to get a letter before I graduate, will I be able to inquire about a reference now, and just hold onto it for a year until applications open? Or will they themselves have to submit at some point, because it might be a bit awkward to ask them in a years time when I’m not a student at the uni anymore.

Also what do JET want in a reference letter? Just wondering if there’s any pointers I should give to who I ask a reference from.
