About time. Kunrei really hinders the kids’ ability to write English words as they think the English alphabet and the Roman alphabet (that the modern English alphabet comes from) are different.

I don’t know how many times I’ve had to explain that, “if you spell your name in English with “si/ti/tu” and not “shi/chi/tsu” it changes the pronunciation”, followed by a shocked, “Eeeeeeeeeeee!?”

Thank god, Kunrei is just painful to look at. Not that you’d have to look at it much, because it barely exists outside of school buildings.
To be honest, I’m on Team Hepburn, but not fanatically so. I don’t really care *that* much.
I just think it’s a hilariously perfect encapsulation for Japanese bureaucracy. I haven’t seen a printed use of Kunrei in years. Even JR uses Hepburn on all its station signage. It is for all intents and purposes already decided by the public, and so now 70 years later the bureaucracy finally makes a decision and the entire justification for their decision is, “well, everyone else already decided, so…”
It was literally the most pointless waste of decision-making energy ever. I would love to know how much money went into that project over even just the last 20 years.
Does anyone else kind of feel like all of the systems fall short in some way? Like, I’m probably most used to seeing Hepburn, but rendering を as “o” is just confusing. Nippon-shiki uses “wo,” but for ふ it wants you to use “hu” which I don’t like.
And while I think rendering おう as ō and うう as ū makes sense, I wish the standard used characters available on a standard keyboard. I wish it was just “ou” and “uu” … like, the way that IME software works.
So it’s going to be Nihon, not Nippon.
Fuck Kunrei, but can they also decide for a single Hepburn variant instead of using like half a dozen different ones?

So the old Kunrei style was the official version of romaji until now? But all of the station names across the entire country are written in Hepburn style. I’m a bit confused.
I always thought that people writing in the old style were just mistaken because that’s how it’s typed on a keyboard (I.e you type si to get し)
Anyway the official change can’t come soon enough, I’m tired of living people saying they live in Tiba and their name is Yuduki
