A question w/Japanese online chat culture

Do Japanese still use this kind of emoji nowadays? ✧٩(ˊωˋ*)و✧

Cus I was told that using regular emojis a lot in the chat are like uncles or grandpas. Just wondering if the trend is 😄 or

  1. I don’t hop in a lot of online chat boards, but while in Discord or on LINE, I kind of see the classic emoji like ☺ etc., getting used more frequently. Kaomoji are definitely used a lot otherwise! I guess maybe from my perspective, when I see the emoji faces I feel like, yeah, the person on the other side of the screen is older. I use both types and I’m in my mid-thirties.

  2. It seems to have mirrored the western internet. Only older people use 😀 and 🙂 anymore. Same with kaomoji in Japanese.

  3. It’s all line stamps in my experience, usually animated ones and often of famous characters.

  4. I see the kaomoji more in “otaku” communities (in-game chat, Discord etc), and my mainstream friends in their late twenties/early thirties use the LINE or iPhone emojis.
