My fiancé asked me this as we were going through a property listing for a 9 bedroom, three floor house with parking for two cars in Ukyo-ku, Kyoto.
We are looking to either buy a cheap akiya or rent in the spring, as we’re both graduating and will be starting jobs, so this house really caught our attention. The thing is he thinks the price is too good to be true.
Some stats:
* Two family home. The top floor apparently had the main family while the second and bottom floor had either the grandparents or the younger family. There’s a kitchen in on both floors, but only one shower and bathroom.
* It’s located in this area that’s called, I believe, a urban control area. So we can’t tear the house down and rebuild it… anything we add, I think, needs to be registered and what can be there is regulated by the city
* It’s near a river
* Forestry seems to be the only industry in the area, outside of the occasional rice paddy
* There’s a lot of emperor/empress burial sites around where it’s at too, does this have anything to do with it?
The house is going for less than 9 million. Many other homes within a 10km radius are at least 300万 more so my fiancé is sus. We are waiting to hear back from the real estate agent to hear what they say.
Edit: 1960 was the year it was built
