  1. **Tokyo plans to build a civilian bomb shelter under a central subway station because of growing global tensions, Japan Times reports.**

It will be dug under the Azabu-Juban subway station in central Tokyo’s Minato Ward.

It’s close to the famous Roppongi shopping district, and also to foreign embassies and many office buildings.

“We have prepared other evacuation facilities in the past, but considering how rocky international affairs are right now we think it’s important to prepare for the serious and significant threat of ballistic missiles,” said Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike.

  2. I don’t know if that’s a responsible precaution or just stoking fear to move the public sentiment more towards militarism.

I’m a bit cynical of the intentions behind the loud missile alert warnings on your phone telling us to get to shelters that don’t exist at 4am every time North Korea tries to launch a satellite.

  3. Just wondering how safe are these underground shelters in an earthquake-prone country like Japan? Aren’t they still waiting for the “big one”? I know they have amazing engineers and planning for that but still.

  4. Could you modify the subways so they where secure against bombing? So you could use them as bomb shelters?

  5. What purpose could this serve but saving only the immediate people located within a 15 minute walk

  6. They should just connect all the underground malls and make a complete – 1 floor around Tokyo.

The conbinis are already in place so people can make life as normal too.

  7. It’s all a ruse, they know they need to prepare for the inevitable return of Kaiju

  8. Real question tho. The current politic conflict and tension doesn’t even involve Japan. Who’s gonna bomb them?

  9. Not against having one, and I bet they can utilize the metro system as a pseudo-tunnel network, but cost might be a problem.

I’ll wait and see what kind of numbers they’ll come up with (then multiply it by 2 to account for the inevitable cost overruns).

  10. There’s always been an emergency storage facility under the Azabu Juban subway station. From what I have read, they’re modifying it to be used as a bomb shelter. Presumably air tight doors and an improved air filtration system.

The newer Oedo line station in Azabu Juban is deeper, and Roppongi’s is the deepest in Tokyo.

That all said, can you imagine the huge rush that would arise as people are told to take cover ?
