Furigana reading on Residence Card

We need to register our inkan at city hall so we can complete loan paperwork to buy a house. The loan officer at the real estate company is telling us we need to go to immigration to get Furigana reading added to our residency card in order to register the inkan.

Searched the internet and it seems the residence card needs to match passport period. Foreigners whose name is originally in Kanji seem to be able to keep that, but that’s not our case (western names in Roman capital letters)

Is this guys just talking out his other end? Any experience getting turned away getting your inkan registered with Roman letter name?
