  1. Short answer: spend less than what you earn.

Long answer: in addition to spending less than what you earn, check your university for scholarships or tuition reduction type of help. In my experience tuition is the main expense while a student. Some university might provide some help paying for rent. Also try buying from websites / companies that give you student discount. Scout the internet and wait for student discounts.

  2. * Find a decent paying バイト and work as often as you can, during long breaks as well.
    * Have good grades and receive scholarships.
    * Budget your expenses and cook at home as often as possible. As someone mentioned, use an affordable supermarket for bulk like 業務スーパー or 肉のハナマサ.
    * Avoid expensive restaurants and opt for cheap izakayas (like トリキ) and similar when going out.

  3. Don’t be picky about food, shelter and clothing

Don’t waste your money on things you don’t need like snacks, candy, soda, coffee, alcohol and paid entertainment

Walk and bike whenever you can instead of using public transport

Buy your food at cheaper places like Gyomu Super, Sundi and Lopia and cook all your meals

Buy your clothes at places like Shimamura, GU, Honeys and second hand stores and only when you have to replace things you wear to school or work

  4. develop a healthy relationship with what you want vs what you need.

You have to stick with what you need and be conscientious of superfluous spending. Make a budget. Write it out. Turn it into something tangible that will help you understand the complete picture of what you have and where it goes.

  5. Use the city health center gym.

Shop for food at closing time at super market.

    Bicycle for all transport.

Pre-drink at the combini so you dont have to at the karaoke-kan.

    Strong-zero.
