I’m Japanese American, and learned the language as a toddler. Unfortunately, this language was never practical in the United States, so naturally, my reading and speaking skills were never up to par when visiting my natural habitat. In fact I can’t even read Japanese text.
Throughout my life however, I usually have an atleast decent understanding of the language itself, depending on the topic. I can also have a solid conversation with a person in Japanese. I do however struggle with understanding business, poltical, science, and military based conversations. Despite this, my older brother (who learned Japanese around the same age as me) considers both of us as beginners, or early elementary school levels at best. Thoughts?
