Received a Job offer in Chiba. Is it good?

I will not disclose the company, but it’s 3,000,000 yen a year (200,000 yen a month after tax) and is for programming

Is this a good pay for living there?

  2. How old are you? Is this your first job? If not, what experience do you have? What field is it in? What kind of life style do you plan on having? Do you have any dependants? Will you have any supplemental income? How long have you been in Japan? What is your Japanese proficiency level, etc., etc.

I can’t tell you whether or not a job offer is good without knowing anything about the nature of you, nor the job offer…

  3. Hopefully they at least give the programmer slaves free water for their work and overtime.

  4. This is a very very low salary. I recruit for IT positions in Japan and the average is 8 to 10m. Of course, it depends on seniority, experience, company etc. Anyway, you could likely do better, even if it’s 5 or 6m.

  5. People here on Reddit have their salary expectations skewed by what foreign companies & progressive Japanese companies pay and that isn’t the norm. Sounds like your company is a more traditional Japanese company, but you didn’t give much details. Yes, 3M is low compared to if you are from the US/EU and 3M could be good if you are from some other countries and factoring in your personal spending habits, how important money is to you, etc. etc….so “good” is subjective.

Living costs are lower in Japan and expenses are lower. You can certainly get by, but dunno how much you will save. That will depend on your spending habits and rent n’ stuff like that. 3M is good in Chiba imo. In Tokyo that’s gonna be tight.

2.5M-4M is a normal new grad salary and people survive on it. I’ve talked with other foreigners from all over..US, AUS, Asia..who came to Japan as a new grad/others who have switched from ALT into IT or programming and they normally fall in that 2.7-4M range at those more traditional Japanese types of company.

2.7M-3M is pretty normal even if you work IT as a new grad though, as companies in Japan tend to put your through a training period.

3M + transportation pay would be absolute bare minimum for me personally. Do they pay for your transportation costs at least? Does your company offer any other benefits?

    here’s a more realistic salary chart ^

You gotta start somewhere. Ofc if you could get a higher salary go for that. You didn’t state what country you’re from, Japanese proficiency and if you are new grad or have experience, so its hard to give a good answer.
