Hello friendly people of Reddit,
I’ve been in Japan about 1.5 years, and eligible to apply for PR due to HSP visa + 80+ points. I’d love to check my understanding about the tax implications before doing so, thus looking for the collective wisdom of this group 🙂 Please let me know if my assumptions/understanding below is correct:
\- Even after I get PR, I’d still not be treated as permanent resident for tax purposes until I’ve been in Japan for 5 years. Hence I wouldn’t have to disclose my global assets until then.
\- If I chose to leave Japan for good, any time before becoming a permanent resident for tax purposes, I would not have to pay exit tax
