What is the cheapest way you have found for a heavy train user to travel?

I live in Nara. I go to Osaka and Kyoto a lot. I like to see diferrent cities like hiroshima and tokyo almost every weekend.

Is it cheaper to buy tickets individually or to get a specific transport pass?
