Thinking of staying in Akihabara

Thinking of booking MONday apart premium in Akiba. We are a pretty boring lot and know it’s not going to have any nightlife. Is it difficult to get to the tourist spots from here? Ok for young kids?

Thanks!

  1. It’s fine but in terms of areas of Tokyo to stay it’s probably very low on my list, local food options are not nearly as varied and interesting as other places.

It is easy access for the yamanote line but I recommend anyone staying in Tokyo to be staying near somewhere that has two lines on the subway, personally I think Akasaka is one of the most convenient places to stay to get around quickly, right on the ginza and maranouchi subway lines. Really easy access to shibuya and shinjuku without having to stay in the busiest part of Tokyo.

  2. Any particular reason you want to stay there? If you found a good hotel near the station at a good price then go for it. Otherwise there’s no particularly good reason to pay a premium to stay in Akiba itself.

  3. Not great for young kids and would not recommend it.

Lowkey it feels like a tourist trap, it’s really loud and packed at night, there’s constantly maid cafe girls approaching every passerby trying to get you to go in. There’s also some sex stores.

I love Tokyo but I was not a huge fan of Akihabara. If you stay near a train or bus line, you can almost get to virtually anywhere in the city or country as a whole without THAT much trouble. Things are very well connected for the most part. I’d say it’s a unique experience and okay to visit but I was happy to stay in a quieter part of shinjuku instead.

  4. If your fixated on Monday Apart, I had a good time at their hotel in Nihonbashi near Kanda. Quiet because it’s a business district but some delicious local food at Kanda station.

  5. Is there a reason why you want to stay in Akihabara rather than Tokyo Station area or Ueno station?

I stayed in Akihabara a few times (even last year) and while it wasn’t a Shinkansen station, it wasn’t that bad.
