Is Japan safe for lgbtq+ people?

Hello, everyone.

I’m visiting Japan for the first time in October and I’ve been reading a bunch of post about how Japan is a really safe country for solo travelers and for women. So as the tittles says… how safe is the country dealing with non- binary/androgynous people? I’m a little nervous about it because I dress pretty masculine and have short hair, I do tend to get misgendered from time to time when I’m out and about (NYC).
I’m worry about using the public women’s bathroom in japan (that’s one of my worst nightmares, to be confronted inside the bathroom and being policed whether I belong there or not). Should I wear a ball cap during my whole stay in Japan?

Any tips and advice is greatly appreciated!
