Family trip to Japan in early April

Hi everyone. My family and I are visiting Japan for the first time in early April, which coincides with my kids’ spring break. As an FYI, my kids are in 4th and 7th grade.

We’re learning Japanese via Duolingo so we can understand and speak basic phrases. Japanese is not easy haha, but we’re getting better at it.

We decided to go the sandwich route by visiting Tokyo (2 days), Osaka (2.5 days), Kyoto (2.5 days), and back to Tokyo (2 days) in that order. Unfortunately, we’re limited on vacation days due to work and school. I’d love to have 3-4 more days honestly.

With the above plan for cities, what do you all consider must see places to visit as a tourist? Any tips for food, events, etc. would be appreciated as well. It sounds like the rail passes aren’t recommended now so I’m assuming we will just pay for single passes.

If we need to register, sign up, or pay in advance for anything prior to arriving, please let me know. I also believe Japan is generally a cash society so does that mean using a credit card will be challenging at times?

Thanks in advance for your recommendations and tips!
