Failed JLPT N4 by 3 Points; Should I Take Retake N4 or Take N3 This Year Instead?

Good Day Everyone, I took the JLPT N4 last December 2023 and honestly felt relaxed while taking the exam. I am not saying that I found it easy (it was challenging TBH), but I was less anxious when I took N4 than N5 in June 2023.

I got 51/120 on Language Knowledge (Vocab/Grammar/Reading) and 36/60 on Listening. Based on the scoring, I passed both sections. However, I needed 90 overall points to pass, whereas I only got 87 (short of three points).

I felt a searing pain in my chest as I saw my JLPT result because I was so close to passing! Now I’m doubting if I should take N3 this July 2024 or if I’d need to retake the N4 to feel validated.

When I was still taking Japanese classes, my sensei always praised me as one of the quick learners. But now that confidence seems to be sliding away.

For context, I started studying Japanese in March 2023, took the N5 in June 2023, and passed.

Also, my relatively relaxed disposition when I took the N4 exam turned out to not be an accurate gauge of how well I did. I’m just feeling down. A few pieces of advice would help.
