Japan Health Insurance in-between travels

Hello, I am finishing up my studies in japan end of march, I was planning on changing my visa to the tourist visa staying for a few months, going home for the summer and then coming back for a different school in the fall.

At the point that my student health insurance gets canceled, Does the city hall expect you to pay the normal rate for insurance up until you leave? or do I need to get another form of insurance at that point?

I assume when you get a work visa it changes to the normal rate but I’m not sure what happens with a tourist visa.

It’s my first time in this situation so I’m just unaware and internet searches haven’t been helpful.

thank you!
