I was not aware of second-hand shops in Japan until yesterday. How did I miss these for so long?

I drove past *Hard Off* and laughed at the name hundreds of times over the years, and thought it was a second-hand computer hardware shop, like “Book Off” is a used book store.

That’s not the case. *Hard Off* is a general used goods shop. Clothes, electronics, musical instruments, camping equipment, everything.

Another I became aware of is *2nd Street*. Some *2nd Street* shops specialize in clothes, but others are essentially, like *Hard Off*, a department store of used things.

There are others, but these are the main ones that I’ve found. I’ve visited 10 of them in the last two days.

Reuse, Recycle, and Reduce are the keys ways that individuals can make a difference in the impact our lives have on the planet. Buying used things whenever possible not only saves you money, but reduces our negative impact in general. I’ve learned that people sell off a lot of hardly used things that are available at really low prices.

My question to those who already know about these places is: Are they willing to negotiate on big ticket items? For example, if they have a guitar by a famous guitar maker that is listed at 130,000, is this set in stone, or is there some way to negotiate? Are the prices their appraisers set negotiable, or not?
