What is the term for the practice of indicating a boundary with an object?

Seeking help&knowledge

What is the correct term for this concept?

When i visited Japan, I learned, that there is a traditional practice to use an object, such as a stick, to indicate a boundary/no trespassing/barrier/stop sign/closed road/public sign/limit.

Eg I photographed a sideroad, which had a stick laying by the “entrance” directly on the ground. (1 meter long thin wooden stick). The stick symbolized, that the road was not to be entered at the time.

As such, this japanese practice of how to design space and communicate limits is in stark contrast to what westerners have chosen to develop. I admire it and would like to refer to the practice in a work I am currently producing.

Unfortunately I cannot find my notes on the correct word for this practice.
