Freelancing for US company while on work visa in Japan

Hi all,

I’ve received a job offer for a marketing manager position in Japan, and the company will be sponsoring my work visa.

I currently do part-time contract freelance copywriting for a US-based company, and I’d really prefer to continue even after I move to Japan.

My primary question is whether I can legally–without jeopardizing my status and visa–freelance part-time for a US company, and get paid in US dollars into a US bank account while working full-time in Japan, and if there are any obvious considerations I should take into account.

I’m happy to pay whatever taxes in either/both countries so far that it’s necessary, but I just want to make sure I’m not jeopardizing my visa status, that’s my concern first and foremost.

Thanks so much, I’m very new to all this.
