I know as ALTs we’re not in a position to strictly discipline students, however what classroom management tips do you establish at the start of the year?
I have a particularly troublesome 5th grade elementary school class. I don’t want to share many details, but students run outside the school during class, harass both teachers and other students, and caused their homeroom teacher last year to take leave due to issues between her and that class.
I know some students actually care about the class and when I wrangle them on an individual level, they can sense my attitude of having respect go both ways. This is something I wish they all could collectively see me trying to convey. They’ve lost respect for the English specialist we have, and I can see they are going to start turning on me next.
With the new school year coming up, what things do you do to reestablish the atmosphere?
