Custom Yukata – Sizing Advice

Hello all,

Looking to get some advice on sizing for a custom Yukata. Long story short, my SO and I always visit a onsen town on our trips to Japan, we love it. We were able to find a Yukata for her while on our trip in 2019, but being on the taller side myself (204cm), we weren’t able to find one that fit me on our last two trips. So after a lot of research, I found a shop that makes custom ones and am moving forward to purchase one.

Would love advice on the following:

1. Yuki sleeve length – my understanding is that you want the sleeves to typically come to your wrist. Unfortunately, the fabric may not be wide enough for my measurement – 87cm – but the shop did mention they can guarantee 80cm length. Would it look awkward to have shorter sleeves?

2. With a custom yukata, anything you would recommend I should be aware of?

The shop I’m ordering from has been great to work with and very helpful, but thought it may be helpful to get some general advice here as well. Thanks!

  1. Sounds like a great trip!

You’re right, the sleeve should hit just at the wrist. 7 cm is a pretty big difference and might look a bit awkward.  Honestly if I were in your shoes I’d wonder if custom sizing that can’t make it to the requirements is really worth it.

Then again if you are not wearing it in Japan no one really is going to care/ know the “rules” so as long as you feel comfortable that’s good.

When ordering yukata or kimono be sure to factor in the time it takes to tailor the piece.  Be aware it can take months for some companies.

Ref. I completed kimono dressing course advanced level and wear kimono every weekend. Also I’ve had several custom made kimono and yukata
