  1. > The government has set up a research group to investigate issues including body image attitudes and diet and lifestyle habits, as part of **attempts to lower the high proportion of underweight young adult women** in Japan, the health ministry said Monday.

    >20.7 percent of women (surveyed) in their 20s had an underweight body mass index of below 18.5

I hope the survey is just an error, but that seems pretty scary, malnutrition from self-starvation is not good. Weight control is an incredibly difficult problem to solve and requires sensitivity to discuss.

  2. The fact they tell pregnant women not to gain weight blows my mind. I live in a neighborhood with a lot of new families and the panic over going over the doctor recommended limit is spooky.

  3. Japan and many other Asian countries have an unrealistic and unhealthy view of “healthy” within society, but only for girls. It is SO frustrating and cringe. If only they treated women better and understand that they are not “creatures” for men to judge.

  4. That’s what happens when you go to most clothing stores and the “Free Size” for skirts etc is equivalent to an XS/S in us standards. I came to japan years ago with no body issues and not overweight, but shopping became such a pain in the butt and I could barely fit into an XL, I lost weight and now its screwed with my head and body image. That’s just the tip of the iceberg though.

  5. I am 152 and 45kg. Back in the day I was 41kg . I went to the gym to get the ‘health check’ done on the first day and they said I was ‘fat’.

I’m a size XS in the US but in Uniqlo Japan I am a size L.

  6. FINALLY!!!
I was severely anorexic as a teen and restricted my food intake a lot. I was down to only 53 kilo at 1m76 so yeah reading about the cinderella weight shit makes me angry because it could be the start into an eating disorder.
After Anorexia I got Bulimia and damaged my stomach permanently (I’m only in my 20’s so pretty f*cked) if I can stop one girl from doing the same I did I’ll be very happy. It’s not worth it
    ~
I weight 65 kilo now which is perfectly fine and I eat what I want but some coworkers made comments about my lunch size, one telling me my Cinderella weight is 59 kilo, explaining why I don’t want to hear that didn’t work.

  7. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20220704/p2g/00m/0na/046000c) reduced by 66%. (I’m a bot)

    > TOKYO – The government has set up a research group to investigate issues including body image attitudes and diet and lifestyle habits, as part of attempts to lower the high proportion of underweight young adult women in Japan, the health ministry said Monday.

    > Within the current fiscal year through March, the research group will review how to survey young women to get a picture of their understanding of eating habits and nutrition, and to capture trends.

    > The 2019 National Health and Nutrition Survey showed 20.7 percent of women in their 20s had an underweight body mass index of below 18.5, while 70.4 percent had a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 deemed a normal weight, and 8.9 percent had an overweight BMI of 25.0 or above.

  8. Wouldn’t it be helpful to also include men of the same age group, simply to gain more data points to triangulate?
