  1. How did she aquire American citizenship after her Japanese citizenship? She is both at the same time at birth. I am not sure I understand the situation completely. Did she have claim citizenship at some point and by doing so she has elected to wave her right to Japanese citizenship?

  2. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://english.kyodonews.net/news/2022/06/d25c7dd60667-japan-born-american-files-suit-against-japans-dual-nationality-ban.html) reduced by 56%. (I’m a bot)

    > A Japanese-born American said Thursday she has filed a lawsuit with a Japanese court claiming that the country's nationality law, which bans its citizens from also holding a foreign nationality, violates the Constitution.

    > Kondo claims that Article 11 of the nationality law, which stipulates that Japanese citizens automatically lose their nationality upon gaining a foreign nationality, violates the right to pursue happiness and equality as guaranteed by the Constitution.

    > The Tokyo District Court in January 2021 rejected a similar lawsuit filed by eight men and women residing in Europe, ruling that Japan's nationality law is constitutional.

  3. This will 100% go nowhere. The Japanese law is pretty straightforward. At age 20 and older, you may not hold two citizenships.

  4. Won’t work. Japan is still in the 1930s, exactly where they want to be

  5. Files suit because “I feel so entitiled and I want everything in this world,”

Maybe simply accept that different countries have different laws and rules, that some countries allow dual nationality while others do not? Japan does not accept dual nationality, and they have made this clear. If you can’t decide and don’t want to give up on another, that’s unfortunate, but that’s your problem; stop blaming the country.

What comes next? Will you file a lawsuit against Japan for not allowing you to marry five people simply because it is legal in some other countries?

  6. While I agree with the sentiment, she would have more rights as a dual citizen. She wasn’t even born with it.

At least leave the anger to real dual citizens.

  7. Here is a rough translation of the advice my embassy (France) provides to its citizens concerning that matter, it may help someone:

    >The Japanese law has only one obligation:
    >
    >DECLARE YOUR CHOICE of Japanese nationality
    >
    >In other words, the obligation to declare for which of the two nationalities one wishes to opt, a process known askokuseki-sentaku(国籍選択)that one is supposed to do between the ages of 20 and 22.
    >
    >→ Let us emphasize that, in fact, it is not a question of the obligation to choose between one’s two nationalities in order tonationality, but literally the obligation to declare which of the two nationalities one wishes toto choose. The nuance is important!
    >
    >- Once this declaration is made, in case of choice of the Japanese nationality, the date of this choice isrecorded in the koseki(戸籍), the Japanese civil status. In the case of the choice of foreign nationality theJapanese nationality is lost, as well as the koseki.

    Edit: format

  8. She wants to write a book about the Japanese legal system, from an American lawyer perspective?
Hopefully she has studied the German legal system, due to the similarities of the Japanese system.
