Do I need a separate ticket for my pet cat on Shinkansen?

I have never ridden a bullet train before and when I tried to look it up on Google there were no useful answers, so I’m hoping someone with experience of travelling with their pets via Shinkansen will answer.

Thanks in advance!!

  1. Small dogs, cats, pigeons and other small animals are not considered a risk or inconvenience to other passengers and may be brought on board for a fee as long as they are kept in a carrying case of a total length, width and height of no more than 120 cm and a total weight of no more than 10 kg.

  2. You need to put it in a cage.

Do you need to put the cage on the seat next to you ? If the answer is yes you absolutely have to put in on the seat, then you can and you will be sure to have the seat for yourself, but that seems overkill.

You could just book the seat at the back of the car, the one where you can put luggage behind the seat (you actually need to book these when you have oversized luggage), so just book a seat and say you have an oversized luggage and you will be ok to use the space to put the cage.

  3. Everyone copy paste the JR East English text but it didn’t mention the fee required. You need 手回り品 ticket, which is usually 290 yen (regardless of your origin/destination).

  4. When I took my two kitties, first I asked at a small normal station and they said they only take cash, not electronic money, of which I had none.

I decided to just wing it, and was lucky enough to have a free seat on the shinkansen beside me, and slept through the guard checking tickets.

  5. It depends on a few things.

    1) How good is your cat’s Japanese?

    2) Do you plan to order a bento and drinks for the cat?

    3) Will your cat be smoking during the trip?
