Freelancing and Taxes When Changing Countries

I’m currently a US citizen with PR in Japan, freelancing with a Japanese company. I am being paid in JPY in Japan.

Later this year, I will move to the US. I will stay for a few years before returning to Japan. I would like to continue freelancing while in the US.

From what I could gather in my research, it looks like it would be best if I notify the Japanese tax office that I will be out of the country and wrap up my taxes in Japan while still living in Japan.

Then, once I am in the US, I should have the company start sending payments to my US bank account. My understanding is that in doing so, I will not have to file and pay taxes in Japan so long as I am living in the US and receiving payment from the Japanese company to my US account. Is that correct?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice regarding this situation.
