Long term visa but without fixed accommodation

I’m living in Japan currently on a Student Visa and am about to start a job that doesn’t pay enough for me to live in central Tokyo anymore.

The thought crossed my mind that I could save a lot of money if I rent a storage unit for my stuff, and then live somewhere like a luxury capsule hotel. Is this actually possible?
Will it mess up my visa if I don’t have a fixed apartment? Or can I rent a mailbox or something too?

  1. I think you need a registered address and hotels don’t qualify. At best you could try to live farther out.

  2. net cafes even are 2000-2500 per day so 60,000-75,000 storage units also range from 10,000 -40,000 based on size so I think you’re still better off having a fixed address

a possible solution would be low cost sharehouses that could be found for 40-50,000

  3. Your registered address needs to be a property registered as a residential property. A storage locker won’t be registered as a residential property.

Get a share house, save up, and then move out (many of us have been there post University)

  4. What about renting very old apartments? I think you can find 35,000~40,000 apartment from 1980. Maybe if you can travel to just a little outside tokyo then you can find those apartment.
