Bringing a dog with us to the US and back

Hello. My partner and I are planning to go to the US for around two weeks in September and we would like to bring our dog with us. We are fairly confident our dog fills the requirements to reenter Japan (vaccines finished, rabies bloodwork done), but we’re a bit skeptical about how lax the regulations on the US side seem. If anybody has recently travelled with their dog to the US and would be willing to share their experience, it would be greatly appreciated. Additionally, we’d love to hear about experience with a dog on Air Canada and how a layover in Canada works with the dog. Thank you!

  1. Don’t put your dog through the horror show of international travel please. 🙁 A pet is a pet, not a baby. They can be left in care.

  2. I’d understand 2 months of travel but for only 2 weeks, that’s a lot of stress to put your pet through twice consecutively

  3. I heard a story about a dog being left with lost baggage at Toronto Pearson for around 21 hours. I would never subject my pet to travel during this time.

  4. Are you military? If so, it becomes massively easier. How large is your dog?

Because of COVID, international pet shipments are a mess right now and a lot of airlines have temporarily suspended pet shipments.

I researched shipping my dog earlier this year (and had already done the 180 day pre-work) and it was not worth the expense or the hassle. It would have been about $6k-12k one way depending on the route I took. Basically double my experience of shipping pets to/from US to UK.
