Working Holiday Visa in Japan – Tax Questions as a German Resident

Hello fellow Redditors,

I’m in the early stages of planning a year-long stay in Japan using the Working Holiday Visa. Currently, I’m a resident in Germany and employed by a German company, with my salary being deposited into a German bank account. I’m curious about the tax implications during my stay in Japan.

In Germany, income tax is deducted directly from my salary, and I fulfill my tax obligations in my home country. However, I’m uncertain about the tax requirements in Japan. Will I still be subject to the 20% income tax in Japan, considering my status as a German resident, working for a German company, and maintaining a German bank account?

I’d greatly appreciate any insights or advice from those who have experience with a similar situation or have knowledge about tax regulations for individuals on a Working Holiday Visa in Japan.

Thank you in advance for your help!
