Interesting but not boujee nor gimmicky night life? Recommendations please!

Hey everyone.

Yet another recommendation post… I know. I’ve been spending hours/days searching for interesting things to do in Tokyo but the other posts I’ve read don’t necessarily encompass what I am looking for. I’ll be visiting for 2 months so I have quite a bit of time to explore.

I guess to describe what I am looking for: I am looking for places where I can meet others, talk to locals, experience live music (post-punk, hip hop, techno, house, etc), or just overall has an interesting vibe. Typically when I travel I really just spend a lot of time walking around and bouncing into as many places as possible.

Generally I’m not looking for the places with bottle service or tardfi workers, more plain or hole in the wall with locals or underground venue. Small isn’t necessary, but not specifically looking to hangout with middle/upper class people… prefer working class or creative types.

From what I’ve gathered so far the areas that would interest me seem to be Shimokitazawa for bars/music, Koenji (I guess the new Shimokita? Can’t find much info on places to visit here), Nakano, or Shibuya/Shinjuku.

I’ve heard some things about Nakameguro but am I correct in assuming this is mostly related to bars/restaurants with contemporary interiors? Like the Williamsburg of Tokyo basically?

Also open to meeting drinking buddies here if you’d like to show me around or hangout.

About me: Brazilian/American, grew up skateboarding and into photography, spent much of my teens going to underground shows or skateboarding until the morning in NYC & Boston. For music I’m generally into old school hip hop, math rock, techno, house, punk, etc. Here in NYC my routine is typically to hangout at dive bars with a pool table, visit a new gallery or museum exhibition, or walk around with my camera and photograph for miles and miles…
