Seeking Advice: Moving to Japan from Canada with Remote Work and Spousal Visa, Concerned about Tax Implications

Hello r/japanfiance community,

I’m a Canadian currently facing the below situation and would greatly appreciate some advice or insights from those who may have experience with a similar scenario.

Background:

I am a Canadian citizen married to a Japanese national who also holds Permanent Residency (PR) in Canada. Together, we have three children who were born in Canada and have Japanese passports as well. My wife has decided to move back to Japan for a year or two, primarily to expose our kids to the Japanese education system, which we believe has strong academic standards and emphasizes values such as teamwork, respect for others, and effort to keep school/home clean.

My Job and Dilemma:

Fortunately, my job allows me to work remotely, providing me with the flexibility to join my family in Japan. However, I am now facing a decision on how to enter Japan – either with a Visitor’s Visa (leaving every 90 days and reentering) or a Spousal Visa.

Concerns:

My main concern with obtaining a Spousal Visa is related to the two properties I own in Canada. I’ve heard there might be tax implications tied to entering Japan with a Spousal Visa, and I’m seeking advice from anyone who may have navigated a similar situation.

Questions:

1. If I enter Japan on a Spousal Visa, how might my Canadian properties be affected in terms of taxes?

2. Has anyone had experience with the Visitor’s Visa approach, leaving every 90 days and reentering? What challenges or complications might arise from this method?

I understand that everyone’s situation is unique, but any guidance, personal experiences, or pointers would be immensely helpful as I navigate this decision. Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.
