East Kyushu worth visiting?

I’m planning to travel around Kyushu for 8 days during the upcoming Chinese new Year vacation. My plan so far is to fly to Fukuoka and then visit the popular destinations such as Nagasaki, Kumamoto/Aso, Kagoshima/Sakurajima etc. I still have about two days to spare though and I want to visit Takachiho Gorge. I’m aware you can visit here from Kumamoto but I’m quite interested in visiting from Nobeoka on the east part of Kyushu and maybe doing a journey up the east coast.

Since I have tattoos and am traveling solo, I won’t be visiting hot spring towns such as Beppu. So I’m wondering if there is much to see and do out east or if it’s mostly just small, nondescript towns. Since it’s winter, I’m not exactly bothered about beaches but I’m interested in quaint towns, coastal views, mountainous areas and just generally getting off the beaten path a little.

Anyone know much about the east part of Kyushu and if it’s worth exploring or if I should just concentrate my time in the west part? Thanks!
