Kansai-Hiroshima pass or JR pass – advice appreciated!

Hi guys

No doubt this has been asked a ton of times already but wanted to get some thoughts on whether the Kansai-Hiroshima pass or JR pass is worth it for our itinerary. I’ve checked the calculators but it’s not quite clear as it may come down to a few thousand yen.

My itinerary is:

Land 15th Feb – Tokyo NRT

* 18th Hakone (Shinjuku-Hakone)
* 19th Kyoto (Hakone to Kyoto)
* 21st Osaka (Kyoto to Osaka)
* 3-4 days in Osaka with day trips to Hiroshima (rtn) and potentially Nara
* 25th Tokyo (Osaka to Tokyo)
Depart 26th PM

We had initially looked at getting the 7 day pass for the Mon 19 – Sun 25 period fitting in the Hakone departure all the way to the penultimate day in Tokyo.

However, it looks like it may be cheaper to get the Kansai pass (5 days) activating it around or just before arrival in Osaka, and using it for 5 days, and predominantly for the Osaka-Hiroshima rtn and potential trips to Miyajima and Nara. I think the benefit of that is you’re not restricted to travel on certain trains?

The downside of the Kansai pass is that we’d need to book individual tickets for the Hakone/Odawara to Kyoto and Osaka to Tokyo legs. Is it too much of a faff to rock up to stations and buy tickets and are we better off just going via the JR Pass?

Advice appreciated! Thanks
