Any downsides to getting PR?

If you’re not certain where you’ll spend the rest of your life, but there’s a fairly good chance you’ll stay in Japan, are there any reasons not to apply for PR?

I know of two tax reasons — Exit Tax and Inheritance Tax.

But for Exit Tax, I assume if you ever do have more than the 100 million threshold (which first of all would actually be AMAZING 🤣) and are leaving the country, you can just sell enough stocks to be below the threshold?

And for Inheritance Tax, I’m not really expecting any inheritance, so no problem there.

Are there any other considerations? I heard that the older you are, they less likely they are to accept the application. So I assume it’s better to apply sooner than later, if you want the PR.

  1. Can’t buy a JR Railpass anymore. I think the only way after PR is to get citizenship, then move overseas.

  2. PR cannot sponsor a helper. Other visas can. That’s my only dissatisfaction with the PR. Other than that, my wife can divorce me and my job can fire me, but I can still stay here…

  3. If you’re on another table 2 visa (spouse or LTR) already OR been in Japan for >10 years (of an aggregated 15 years) on a table 1 visa then you’re already an “unlimited tax payer” and thus liable for tax on overseas inheritance and overseas gifts.
