1LDK or 2DK for a couple?

Hello all!

I’m planning my move to Tokyo and am hesitating to go for a 1LDK or 2DK apartment for a couple. I was planning to bring my bed which is 160/200cm but everyone is telling us not to bring the bed.

What do you all recommend? Our budget will probably be around 150,000 – 170,000Yen

  1. I would not bring it unless your company is paying shipping / compare the costs.
Also you do not say what area but that price range is good for a 2ldk in most area’s.

  2. Do you plan to have any friends or family stay over for more than a few days at a time? Do you need a study/spare room at other times? Do you think you’ll entertain people and hold dinner/drinking parties? Or both? We have a 2LDK (125000/month) and are very happy with the space and size. Most of the time the second bedroom is used for separating the various types of recyclables, though!

  3. We have a 2LDK (built in 2016), it’s kind of expensive, but I think you can find older apartments for less! It’s roomy, and we use our second room as an office/guest room (futon) so it gets use. We definitely didn’t need it though and I think a large one bedroom would be fine!

Also, for what it’s worth we have a 160×200 bed, but could fit a king if we wanted. We didn’t bring ours over, we just shipped house hold items and clothes. If you think you can find a place large enough, and have the ability to ship the mattress, then sure! But you can get that size here

  4. I have a 1DK with a double bed. I think it’s like 140x200ish. My girlfriend says it’s too big, but I like my bed so… We don’t live together, but even if we were to, I don’t think I’d mind about the space. I don’t need a ton of space, but that’s just me.

Also, it’s important to note that not all apartments of the same layout are the same size. I live in Chiba close to Tokyo, but I’d imagine rooms of similar layouts and pricing are a bit smaller in Tokyo.
