Stolen bike insurance.

I want to insurance for bike theft but can’t seem to find any resources. It’s not a $2 mamachari and I need to insure it for about $5,000.

I have receipts and all but not sure where to go to get it done. I’m carrying it up two flights of stairs and keeping it overnight in my extra bedroom. I don’t want to keep doing this haha.

My japanese friends had never hear of replacement insurance before, so I turn to reddit.

  1. This kind of general insurance will generally only cover the value of the bike, not deal with sourcing a like-for-like ‘replacement’. Maybe that’s why you didn’t get much from your friends?

Anyway, there are various providers for insurance against theft and the applications can be done online. A quick google for ‘自転車 盗難 保険 80万’ turns up some promising results.

  2. Can you get it at the store you purchased it from? I got it from the store when I bought the bike. There was a clause in the terms like if it was stolen in the first year you get 80% of the value, 2nd year like 60% and so on. They depreciate the value of the bike every year, like how cars depreciate.

  3. I can’t speak to it personally but in this case you need riders insurance AND a separate property insurance not totally specific to bicycles to be reimbursed for things like theft. Either way a 5k dollar bike, you’ll need to be carrying that up to the room every day still.

  4. I doubt you’ll find an insurance provider in Japan willing to insure anything in a currency other than yen.

  5. If the bike is worth that much, you should be carrying it up anyway. Not just for theft, but to keep it out of the elements. Even if you have a covered parking space, it will still be exposed to a lot and that really does a number on the mechanical parts. When I lived in an apartment, I bought a tall rack that I could hang my bike from and also had some storage for my gear. I had a lot fewer problems than I did when I kept it outside.

  6. Why not insure it AND keep it in the house? Easier to charge up all the electronics… sleep
Better… heck, hang it on the wall! Accidental damage in appartment cycle racks happens. Easy to find wheels bent, frame scratched etc
